Hudson, New York - Fall Getaway

It is mid-August in NYC and I'm growing weary of summer in the city! Perhaps it is the relentless heat and humidity (neither of which do wonders for my hair!) or the increasing stinkiness on the streets but I am dreaming of an Upstate escape come fall.  Last November (based on a glowing Travel + Leisure feature) my boyfriend and I chose Hudson, New York for our anniversary weekend.  It was perfect.  We just caught the turning of the leaves - I was hanging out of the car window trying to photograph all the beautiful shades of orange and red on the trees on the way up.

The White Room, The Inn at Hudson
We stayed at The Inn at Hudson, a charming 8-bedroom, antique-filled B&B on Allen Street, just a few blocks walk from Warren Street.  The owners, Dini & Windle, were in a band an 80s rock band called Human Sexual Response - they have a couple of awesome posters nodding to those days! It was so cozy and inviting that, despite the guilt we felt about our utter laziness, we spent an afternoon in bed watching cheesy movies.

Warren Street, Hudson, New York
Warren Street is home to loads of incredibly stocked antique shops (too many to mention!).  We wandered around for hours and also went off the beaten track to take in some of the local architecture. We  were spoiled for choice when it came to restaurants - the stand-outs were Scandi-influenced DA / BA and the ever-popular Swoon on Warren Street; and Local 111 which is a short drive away in Philmont.  I noticed that a lot of restaurants and cafes were serving Strongtree Coffee so we stopped by the store on South Front Street.  It was so delicious we bought a bag of coffee beans to take home!

Antiques and dining are two very strong aspects of Hudson but it's also interesting to explore the history and future of art in the area.  We stopped by Olana, the Persian-style home of Frederic Edwin Church, a Hudson River School painter.  Since our trip, there has been an addition to the artistic landscape and I can't wait to go to Basilica Hudson, an industrial art space which has recently been re-opened by Melissa Auf de Mer... Enjoy!
